Getting Started & Game Basics

What is Marvel Contest of Champions (MCOC)?

MCOC is a free-to-play 1-on-1 fighting game from Kabam where you collect Marvel Champions and fight through story quests, PvP modes, and alliance events. It launched in December 2014 on mobile, and a full PC version arrived on Steam in June 2025 with cross-platform progress.

Is MCOC pay to win?

No. MCOC can be fully played and progressed for free, and almost all content is clearable without spending real money. Spending speeds up ranking champions, pulling crystals, and 7-Star Ascension, but skill still decides most fights - especially in Battlegrounds, where everyone fights with the same rules.

Is MCOC shutting down?

No, MCOC is not shutting down. This question comes up almost every year on Reddit and the official forums, but Kabam has kept releasing new champions, events, and features like 7-Star Ascension and Alliance Coliseum right through 2026.

Which platforms can I play MCOC on?

MCOC works on Android, iOS, and PC through Steam, with your account and progress synced across all three. Stick to official versions only - emulators or modified APKs can get your account permanently banned.

How many champions does MCOC have?

MCOC has crossed 300 playable champions as of 2026, spread across 6 classes: Cosmic, Tech, Mutant, Skill, Science, and Mystic. Kabam adds new champions almost every month. See the full MCOC Champions List by year.

I just started MCOC. What should I focus on first?

Clear Story Quest chapters in order, join an active alliance as early as possible, and don't rank up any champion until you've checked a tier list. Read the full MCOC Guide for Beginners.

Champions, Classes & Tier List

What are the 6 MCOC classes and which class beats which?

The class chain runs Cosmic beats Tech, Tech beats Mutant, Mutant beats Skill, Skill beats Science, Science beats Mystic, and Mystic beats Cosmic. Each class deals bonus damage to the class it beats and takes reduced damage from it - useful to know when picking defenders for Alliance War. See the full Class Bonus & Weakness Chart.

Who is the best champion in MCOC right now (2026)?

Based on current tier lists, Hercules is considered the single best 7-star investment because his immortality mechanic works the same at any star level or rank, making him a safe rank-up at nearly every stage of progression. Check the full Offense and Defense Tier List.

How do I decide which champions to rank up?

Check an updated attack and defense tier list, then prioritize champions who score well on both - they give the most value across Story Quest, Alliance War, and Battlegrounds. See the MCOC Best Champs Guide.

What does "duped" or "awakened" mean in MCOC?

A champion is "duped" once you unlock their signature ability, which usually adds a strong passive bonus. You unlock it by pulling a second copy of that champion, or by using an Awakening Gem on them. See the Best Champions for Awakening Gems.

Alliance Quest, War & Coliseum

What is Alliance Quest (AQ)?
What is Alliance Coliseum, and did it replace Alliance Quest?

Alliance Coliseum launched in December 2025 as a mode that temporarily replaces Alliance Quest and Raids. It runs on a Multiple Health Bars system, where all 30 alliance members work together to post the highest combined score. A single-player version, Solo Coliseum, followed in January 2026 with endlessly scaling defenders.

Battlegrounds & PvP

What is Battlegrounds and how do I unlock it?

Battlegrounds is a skill-based PvP mode where you build a deck of champions and fight other summoners in best-of-three matches. To unlock it, clear Act 5.2.6 and earn the Uncollected title; each entry costs 15 Energy or 90 Elder's Marks.

How does Battlegrounds ranking work (Victory Track vs Gladiator's Circuit)?

You start in Victory Track, where wins earn Victory Medals and losses cost one (Victory Shields can protect you from demotion). Once Victory Track is complete, you move to Gladiator's Circuit, a global leaderboard where points come purely from wins and losses, with the weekly meta changing the rules of engagement.

Who are the best attackers and defenders in Battlegrounds right now?

Community picks for top attackers currently include Hercules, Archangel, Ghost, and Kitty Pryde, while Korg, Hulkling, Thing, and Nick Fury remain strong defensive picks. Since the Battlegrounds meta shifts every week, always check the active modifiers before locking your deck. Read the full Battlegrounds Meta guide.

Story Quest, Variants & Special Quests

7-Star Ascension, Masteries & Resources

What is 7-Star Ascension (Ascension+)?

Ascension+ is a progression system that let select 7-star champions go beyond the normal rank ceiling. Ascending a champion keeps their existing rank and signature level, and unlocks a passive damage system called Might that builds into an automatic ISO-Burst state.

Does every 7-star champion get Ascension?

No. Only champions in Kabam's official Ascension pool can be ascended, and the pool has been expanded gradually, class by class, rather than opened for every champion at once. Check the official MCOC news page before saving resources for a specific champion.
