I wrote one of the first MCOC mastery guides back in 2017, when Precision and Cruelty were the shiniest thing in the game and "Suicides" meant three masteries, not a whole playstyle. A lot has changed since then level cap, mastery point totals, and the entire way you're allowed to save and swap builds. This is a full rebuild of that guide for where the game actually stands today, with every official mastery detail and all of my own tested numbers kept intact below.
What Is Mastery in MCOC?
Mastery is the system that lets you permanently boost your champions' Attack, Defense, and Utility performance using mastery points earned from leveling up. There are three mastery trees:
- Offense - boosts attack, critical rating, critical damage, bleed, and other damage-related stats.
- Defense - boosts health, healing, resistance, and block-related stats.
- Proficiencies (Utility) - boosts stun duration, evade windows, power gain, and class-specific effects.
Mastery points can be reset and re-spent at any time for free (you only pay to rank masteries back up), which is what makes experimenting with different builds and now, saving several of them as Loadouts worth doing.
Mastery Point Guidelines for 2026
- You need Summoner Level 6+ to start configuring masteries.
- New players get their first mastery point auto-spent into Parry at Level 6, at no extra cost.
- You earn one mastery point per level-up. The old figure of 59 total points at Level 60 is outdated: Kabam raised the level cap toward 70 for the game's 10th anniversary, and the practical total is now roughly 63 points for a fully-progressed account at the current Level 65 cap, with more arriving as Levels 66-70 roll out.
- Mastery points raise your Power Index (PI) as well as your champions' Attack (light, medium, and special damage), Defense (health, heal power, reduced block damage, crit resistance), and Utility.
What Are Mastery Loadouts (And Why This Changes Everything)
This is the single biggest change since the old "one perfect build" era, and it's the part most guides including my own original one never got updated for.
Mastery Loadouts let you save multiple full mastery builds and switch between them without rebuilding from scratch every time. Here's the part that trips people up: it's not just "three loadouts, pick one."
- You get three general loadouts you can freely rename and reassign to anything (Questing, Arena, a hybrid build, whatever you want).
- Switching between these three costs 35 units per switch.
- Alliance War Defense gets its own dedicated loadout slot that's completely separate from the three general ones it applies automatically when you're being attacked, at no switching cost.
- Battlegrounds Defense also gets its own dedicated slot, same deal.
That's why a "Best Defense" loadout genuinely covers both AW Defense and Battlegrounds Defense in practice they're the two modes that get a free, always-on defensive slot, separate from whatever you're running on attack. Meanwhile your three general loadouts are free to specialize hard: one for clean questing, one full Suicides for Arena, maybe a third for anything odd that comes up.
If you're still running a single do-everything build, you're leaving free value on the table. There's no unit cost to holding a build in a loadout slot only to switching between the three general ones.
Use the Mastery Setup Tool
Reading point allocations off a wall of text is slow and easy to get wrong. Use the interactive tool below it shows recommended masteries lit up directly on the real mastery tree, so you can see exactly what to unlock and where.
How to use it:
- Pick your goal from the buttons at the top - Best Attack, Suicides / Recoil, Best Defense, or Balanced.
- Switch between the Offense, Defense, and Proficiencies tabs to see that tree.
- Lit-up masteries with a gold points badge (like 5/5) are the recommended points for that goal. Greyed-out ones aren't part of that build.
- Check the points bar at the top of each build to see how many of your total points it uses.

The tool is read-only by design. it's meant to be a quick reference you check before you open the in-game mastery screen and start spending points yourself, not a mastery calculator that changes your actual account.
The Core Masteries Every Build Needs First
Before you specialize into any of the builds below, there's a foundation almost every serious build shares. Unlock these in roughly this order regardless of your playstyle:
- Parry and Dexterity - unlock before anything else. Parry cuts block damage and adds stun on a well-timed block; Dexterity gives you an evade window on dash-back plus a crit buff. Both are core to how combat actually plays, not optional extras.
- The Core 15 - 1 point each in Strength, Greater Strength, Pierce, Lesser Precision, and Lesser Cruelty, then max Precision and Cruelty (5/5 each). This is the cheapest, highest-value crit investment in the game and forms the base of every attack-focused build.
- Block Proficiency and Perfect Block (max both) - survivability for any content that runs longer than a couple of fights.
- Limber and Stupefy (max both) - better stun control both offensively and defensively.
- Willpower (just 1 point) - this single point unlocks Inequity, one of the strongest utility masteries in the game.
- Inequity (3/3) - reduces the opponent's effective attack by up to 36% once six debuffs are stacked. This is close to a must-have on any build in 2026's debuff-heavy meta.
Everything past this point is where your build starts to branch based on what you're actually doing in-game.

Best Mastery Setup for Attack (No Suicides)
This is your default build for Story content, Act quests, and boss fights where you don't want any self-damage risk.
| Mastery | Points | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Precision / Cruelty | 5/5 each | Universal crit rating and crit damage |
| Assassin (Optional) | 3/5 | Up to 60% bonus attack once the enemy drops under 18% health a genuine boss killer |
| Deep Wounds | 5/5 | Adds 5 extra bleed ticks, huge for any bleed-based champion |
| Despair | 3/3 | Cuts enemy healing per debuff stacked on them |
| Block Proficiency | 4/4 | Keeps you alive through long paths |
| Mystic Dispersion | 4/5 | If you're running Mystic attackers, this is close to mandatory |
Best Suicide / Recoil Mastery Setup
Suicides - Glass Cannon, Recoil, Liquid Courage trade a slice of your own health for a genuinely huge attack boost. This is the fastest way to clear Arena fights and grind through content you're not worried about surviving.
The one rule that matters more than any other: run Willpower with this build, always. Without it, the self-damage just isn't worth the attack gain.
| Mastery | Points | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Precision / Cruelty | 5/5 each | Same crit foundation as any build |
| Glass Cannon | 1/3 | Attack for a small slice of max health - the best value trade in the Suicide tree |
| Liquid Courage/ Double Edge | 3/3 each | Big attack boost; the poison it applies gets offset by Willpower |
| Recoil | 1/3 | One point only - going further starts punishing you every time you fire a special |
| Willpower | 3/3 | Mandatory. This is what makes the whole build survivable |
| Coagulate | 3/3 | Cuts down the bleed/poison damage from your own Suicide masteries |
When to skip this build entirely: champions that fire specials constantly (Recoil punishes every activation), anti-suicide nodes like Special Delivery or Heal Block, and this one's important Alliance War Defense. Attackers can bait a defender's Recoil and Liquid Courage and turn your own masteries against you.
Best Mastery Setup for AW and Battlegrounds Defense
Since both modes get their own free dedicated loadout slot, it makes sense to treat them as one build: make your defenders as unpleasant as possible to fight, with zero self-damage risk an attacker can exploit.
| Mastery | Points | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Precision / Cruelty | 5/5 each | Crit still matters on defense |
| Despair | 3/3 | Blocks the attacker's own Willpower/heal payoff |
| Limber | 5/5 | Max value here makes defenders far trickier to fight around mistimed dashes |
| Mystic Dispersion | 5/5 | Mystic defenders become dramatically harder to deal with |
| Deep Wounds (Optional) | 5/5 | Strong on bleed-based defenders like Nick Fury |
| Assassin (Optional) | 5/5 | Punishes attackers who let a fight drag past the halfway mark (Optional) |
Never run Recoil or Liquid Courage here. They're the two masteries attackers most love to see on a defender, since both can be turned into extra damage against you.
Balanced Mastery Setup (If You Only Want One Loadout)
If you'd rather not juggle multiple builds, this spreads points across attack and defense reasonably evenly. It won't beat a specialized build in any one mode, but it holds up everywhere.
| Mastery | Points | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Precision / Cruelty | 5/5 each | Non-negotiable in any build |
| Despair / Deep Wounds | 1/3, 5/5 | Solid all-round damage and utility |
| Block Proficiency / Recovery | 4/4, 3/3 | Keeps you alive across longer sessions |
| Willpower / Inequity | 1/3, 3/3 | The Inequity unlock, without committing further into Suicides |
| Mystic Dispersion | 3/5 | Same value regardless of build type |
Should You Run Suicide Masteries in 2026?
Kabam's own creator-facing Mastery Showcase content backs this up directly: several top creators say they now keep Recoils off by default for most content, but treat it as its own dedicated loadout for Arena specifically, since a free loadout slot means there's no longer a real reason not to.
Run Suicides if:
- You're grinding Arena and want fights to end faster
- Your champion already has built-in healing that offsets the self-damage.
- Best Suicide / Recoil Friendly Champs List - Ghost, Omega Red, Mr. Sinister, Bastion, Warlock, Iceman, Ultron, Solvarch, Nimrod, Knull, Namor, Gentle, King Groot, Hercules, Kitty Pryde, Omega sentinel, Corvus Glaive, Guillotine 2099, Viv Vision, Diablo, Hit Monkey, Mole Man, Captain Marvel (Movie), Dust, Hulk (Immortal), Sandman, Hulkling, Serpent, Kushala, Spider Woman)
- You're questing through content, you're confident about clearing
Skip them, or keep them in a separate loadout, if:
- Your champion relies on chaining specials often (Recoil punishes every activation)
- You're facing anti-suicide nodes
- You're setting up Alliance War Defense - full stop, don't run these there
Updated Mastery Tier Notes for 2026
A few verdicts have shifted since the older guides floating around were written:
- Inequity has gone from a "nice to have" to close to mandatory. In a meta this debuff-heavy, a 36% effective attack reduction on the opponent is too much value to skip for 3 points.
- Despair is worth maxing rather than the single point older guides suggested. it directly shuts down an opponent's healing loop, including their own Willpower.
- Deep Wounds is still bleed-specific, but with how many current meta champions lean on bleed (Venom, Okoye, Nick Fury among them), 5/5 is a bigger damage jump than it used to be.
- Petrify is more useful than most players give it credit for it cuts combat power and ability triggers on a stunned target, and can flip an opponent's own Heal Block into a heal reversal against them.
- Unfazed is worth actively avoiding on some attackers, since it can interfere with your own champions like Spider-Man (Stark Enhanced) and Count Nefaria.
Are Class Masteries Worth It?
Short answer: mostly no, with one clear exception.
Mystic Dispersion (5/5) earns every core it costs. It changes how often Mystic attackers get their specials off, and turns Mystic defenders into a real problem for anyone attacking them.
The other class masteries - Collar Tech, Serum Science, Cosmic Awareness, Mutagenesis are only worth it if you specifically run a lot of champions from that class and want the marginal edge (Collar Tech, for example, only really pays off if Tech champions like Ant-Man (Future) make up a real chunk of your roster). For most players, that core spend is better saved.
Comparison: All Four Loadouts at a Glance
| Loadout | Best For | Avoid On |
|---|---|---|
| Best Attack | Story, Act content, boss fights | — |
| Suicides / Recoil | Arena, fast questing | AW Defense, special-heavy champions |
| Best Defense | AW Defense, Battlegrounds Defense | Attack content |
| Balanced | Players who want one build for everything | Highly specialized content |

Frequently Asked Questions
How many mastery points are there in MCOC in 2026?
Roughly 63 for a fully-progressed max-level account, up from the old total of 59. Kabam is adding more as the Summoner Level cap climbs from 65 toward 70.
What is the best mastery setup for a new player?
Unlock Parry and Dexterity first, then complete the Core 15 (Precision and Cruelty maxed), then Block Proficiency and Perfect Block. That covers the large majority of early and mid-game content.
Should I run Suicide masteries?
Only with Willpower alongside them, and only outside Alliance War Defense. They're strongest for Arena grinding and fast questing on champions that don't rely on chaining specials.
What are Mastery Loadouts?
A system that lets you save several full mastery builds and switch between them. You get three general loadouts (35 units to switch), plus a free dedicated loadout each for Alliance War Defense and Battlegrounds Defense.
Is Mystic Dispersion worth unlocking?
Yes. it's the one class mastery worth maxing for almost anyone with strong Mystic champions on either side of a fight.
Can I reset my masteries for free?
Yes, resetting and re-spending mastery points has always been free. The cost is only in ranking them back up. Loadouts remove even that friction for builds you've already saved.
Have a mastery setup that's working well for you that isn't listed here? Drop it in the comments. I'm always updating this guide as the meta shifts.
